Unit 3 - Types of Forest Research
Lesson 2: Forest Protection
In Canada, protecting the forests is the responsibility of the Canadian Forest Service (CFS), which comes under the Department of Natural Resources.
The CFS has developed several plans to guide its activities and priorities for the 2019-2029 years.
The plans, developed by the CFS, include:
- managing cumulative effects in Canada's forests
- enhancing forest climate change by encouraging research to produce science and tools that are relevant, timely and useful
- managing forest pests by conducting scientific research to predict and prevent the negative impacts insects and diseases have on Canada's forests
- a commitment to sustainable forest management practices in order to ensure that forests maintain their environmental, social, cultural, and economical values now and into the future
- a focus to build a national wildland fire science capacity across Canada in order to prepare Canada for new and changing wildland fires
