Lesson 1
Supplies, Yarns and Tools
The process of cross stitch has two basic tasks:
- Preparing the floss (yarn) for your cross stitch design.
- Once the floss has been prepared, it is important to locate the center of your fabric so that you can center the design on it.
Every design will have a finished size shown. Add at least 3 inches all around the design for framing or more if your finishing technique requires it.

- Cross stitch usually is inexpensive but can become more expensive as you become more advanced.
- Floss is usually composed of six individual strands twisted together. This allows you to adjust the thickness of your stitching by using different number of strands.
- Charts and instructions commonly refer to a strand as a ply.
- Purchase the floss from among those recommended for the chosen project.
- If substituting the floss, select one which is as close as possible in weight and type to the yarns recommended in the pattern.
- Check the label for dye lot number. Purchase all the floss needed for the project from the same dye lot to avoid color variations.
- Check the label for care information, tension and recommended needle size.

These are precise square-patterned weave with visible stitching holes, or squares.
Later more advanced cross stitchery stitch on linen or other even weave fabrics.

These charts contain all the information you need to stitch your design.

A tapestry needle also called a darning needle is used for sewing sections together, and working your floss through the project.

Hoops help keep your fabric taut while stitching. This is the best way to keep your stitches even and the tension of your stitching consistent.
