Cross Stitch Terminology
Each textile art has its own terminology. The list below includes common cross stitch terms, but does not include all cross stitch terminology. It is important to refer to your pattern to see if any other cross stitch terminologies are referred to.
Back Stitch
A back stitch is a straight stitch used for outlining or lettering.
Cross Stitch
A cross stitch is an x-shaped stitch.
French Knot
The French knot is a decorative stitch used to add detail. The French knot can be used as a center of a flower or eyes to an animal.
Half Stitch
The half stitch is a diagonal stitch that goes from one corner of the fabric square to the opposite corner. This can be used to add interest and texture.
Quarter Stitch
A quarter stitch resembles a half stitch but is half its length and only extends into the center of the stitching square. This can create details or to complete a three quarter stitch that is stitched in a different color.
Three Quarter Stitch
A three quarter stitch is used to create curved design lines.
