Terminology and Abbreviations

Embroidery Terminology


Each textile art has its own terminology. The list below includes common embroidery terms, but does not include all embroidery terminology. It is important to refer to your pattern to see if any other embroidery terminologies are referred to.



Edge finishes
A temporary edge finish on your embroidery fabric to help prevent fraying as you stitch.
Marking
To serve as an aid in positioning the frame and referencing the needle start points.
Warp
The horizontal threads in a woven fabric.
Weft
The vertical threads in a woven fabric.
Needle Minders/Needle Keepers
A needle minder is a tool to keep your pre-threaded needles safe and on-hand while stitching.
