The stockinette stitch is produced by knitting one row and purling the next row. It has 2 different sides.

Purl Side

Ribbing is produced by alternating a number of knit stitches with purl stitches. Although other combinations are used, the most common form of ribbing is knit two, purl two. This means knit two stitches in the regular way, bring yarn forward, and purl two stitches; bring yarn to the back, knit two stitches, and continue in this manner until the row is completed. The next row is done in exactly the same manner.
