  • Cord used for macramé must be strong, smooth and not stretch.

  • Macramé is usually worked on a flat surface called a knotting board.

  • Macramé suggest that the yarn length be 8 times the finished project length.

  • The more knots in the project, or the more tightly tied the knots, the more cord required.

  • Thick yarns are used up more rapidly that thin cords.
  • Macramé cord is made up of several lengths of tightly woven twisted yarns which add strength.

  • Household string, butcher's twine, venetian blind cord and special macramé cord can be used.

  • Fiber types are cotton, linen, jute, polyester, and nylon.

  • Purchase the cord from among those recommended for the chosen project.

  • If substituting the cord, select one which is as close as possible in weight and type to the cord recommended in the pattern.

  • Check the label for dye lot number. Purchase all the cord needed for the project from the same dye lot to avoid color variations.

  • Before buying cord for the entire project, it is advisable to buy a small amount to test.

  • Measure the length of cord used to make the small sample. Use this information when calculating the length required for your project.

Scissors are used during the project to cut pieces.

T-pins are used to hold your project pieces on the mounting board.

A tapestry needle also called a darning needle is used for sewing sections together, and working your yarn through the project.

Clips can be used to hold your project or to separate pieces.
