Lesson 5
Macramé Techniques
The Square Knot
The square knot is one of the basic knots and it is a knot that lies flat.
The square knot is one of the basic macramé knots. The basic knot is tied with four cords; the two inside cords are anchor cords, the two outside cords are knotting cords. A square knot lies flat. When only half of the square (a half knot) is tied in a sennet, it will twist around itself.
To tie a square knot with four cords, put the left cord over the two center cords and under the right cord (a). Then bring the right cord under the center cords and up through the loop formed at the left (b). This completes the half knot and is
the first half of the square knot.

To finish the square knot, bring the right cord over the two center cords and under the left cord (c). Then bring the left cord under the two center cords and up through the loop formed by the right cord (d). Draw evenly tight.

There are many variations of the square knot. If you are following a pattern, the pattern will explain the variation.
