Terminology and Abbreviations

Needlepoint Terminology


Each textile art has its own terminology. The list below includes common needlepoint terms, many of the terms are the same as embroidery terms. It is important to refer to your pattern to see if any other needlepoint terminologies are referred to.



Marking
To serve as an aid in positioning the canvas and referencing the needle start points.
Warp
The horizontal threads in a woven fabric.
Weft
The vertical threads in a woven fabric.
