Lesson 1

Supplies, Yarns and Tools

The process of weaving has three basic tasks:

  1. Shedding is separating the warp yarns into two layers by lifting and lowering the shafts, to form a tunnel known as the shed.
  2. Picking or Filling is passing the weft yarn across the warp threads through the shed.
  3. The interlacing of each weft yarn length with the warp yarns is called the weaving cycle.

The weaving cycle is sequenced and repeated throughout the project.

  • Looms can be very complex and costly or homemade and inexpensive.

  • Frame looms are primarily used for small projects, tapestries, wall hangings and free weaving. These are very portable, inexpensive and simple.

  • Table looms can be set on a table and will weave up to 60 cm widths.

  • A floor loom is basically set up the same as the table loom but permits wider and longer weaving.

  • An important reminder when choosing the perfect yarn or thread is that weaving requires two different types.

  • Warp threads are the background for your weaving project.

  • Weft threads are the filler for your project.
  1. Coarse threads for rugs.
  2. Fine yarn for scarfs and blankets.

  • Purchase the yarn from among those recommended for the chosen project.

  • If substituting the yarn, select one which is as close as possible in weight and type to the yarns recommended in the pattern.

  • Check the label for dye lot number. Purchase all the yarn needed for the project from the same dye lot to avoid color variations.

  • Check the label for care information, tension and recommended needle size.

  • Check the yarn recovery. Stretch and release a 15 cm length. Does it return to its original size?
Hammer and nails are used to set up your loom.

A ruler is used to measure your frame and spacing between nails.

A tapestry needle also called a darning needle is used for sewing sections together, and working your yarn through the project.

Thread is the fibers that will make your project.

A dowel is a long rounded piece of wood used for a shred rod, stabilizing rod and helping  pick up warp threads.

A canvas mat can be used as your frame for your weaving project.
