Lesson 3
Weaving Techniques
Creating your own loom
You do not need to spend a lot of money to get into looming. The next few lessons will show how to make your own loom and simple techniques for weaving.
- A simple loom can be made with nails hammered every 5 mm to 1 cm intervals on a wooden frame. The warp yarns are strung from nail to nail. The weft yarn is wound onto a shuttle which is woven by hand through the warp threads.

- A shuttle or blunt needle can be used to carry the weft thread.

- A ruler can be used to form a shed.

- Weaving is an over one string, under one string, then over one again motion. To create different effects the weft can go over and under varied numbers of warp strings.

- Different yarn textures and sizes result in unique weavings.
- Weavings can be done on a round hoop. The warp yarn must be strung and the weft yarn woven around. The ideas are endless!

- Other warp and weft ideas include ribbon, cord, feathers and fabric, leather and fur strips.
