Lesson 2
Serger Safety
A serger is a perfect compliment to a sewing machine. A serger will stitch, trim, and finish a seam in one operation. It sews at twice the speed of a sewing machine and requires these special safety practices.
- Avoid pinning on the seamline because pins will interfere with serger sewing and cutting, resulting in costly damage to the cutting blades and needles.
- Position fingers carefully when guiding fabric under the presser foot.
- Unplug the serger when cleaning or trouble shooting.
- Serge at a slower speed for better control. Feed the fabric through slowly checking nothing is caught underneath.
- Avoid forcing the serger to continue sewing if it jams.
- When the serger jams, unplug it and carefully pull out unwanted threads.
- Be organized when serging. Do not allow others to distract you.
- Unplug the serger from the electrical outlet before threading or when cleaning or clearing unwanted threads.
