Lesson 3
Scissors, Seam Ripper, and Rotary Cutter Safety
Scissors, seam rippers, and rotary cutters come in a variety of sizes. These are extremely sharp so must be handled with care.
- Use fabric shears correctly by placing fingers in the bigger ring and thumb on top. Cut with long strokes. Always cut away from you.
- Pass scissors handle first. When walking with scissors, keep the points facing down.
- Use a seam ripper safely by ripping stitches in a direction away from you.
- Use the rotary cutter by pushing it away from your body, keeping fingers away from the disk-like blade. Wrap old blades in cardboard for disposal. Keep extra blades safely in a container.
- Position the guard over the blade when the rotary cutter is not being used.
- Use the rotary cutter only on a self-healing mat, never on an unprotected table or countertop.
- Run cold water over cuts. Apply pressure to the cut to stop the bleeding.
- Seek first aid for serious cuts.
