Lesson 3

Marking Tools

  • Chalk marker - a refillable marker to put pattern symbols onto fabric. The chalk brushes off easily.

  • Tracing wheel - a tool to transfer markings from pattern to fabric; used with tracing paper.

  • Dressmaker's tracing paper - a waxed carbon paper that transfers to the fabric when a tracing wheel is pushed over it.

  • Marking pencil - a chalk pencil that marks easily and directly to the fabric.

  • Liquid marking pencil - a special pencil that marks the fabric and disappears within 48 hours or washes off with water. Some types of marking pencils are permanent, so read instructions and labels carefully before using.
