Lesson 16 — Activity 3:
Conserving Energy at Home
Explore
You know that burning fossil fuels contributes to the greenhouse effect and global climate change. You also know that alternative sources of energy that do not emit greenhouse gases can be used for many activities. What are some ways that you can apply what you know to reduce your impact on the environment? You will think about that question in this activity.
Here are some of the energy saving tips that you could try in your home:
- Be sure your home is well insulated and free from drafts that let cold air into the home in the winter and warm air into the home in the summer. Are your doors and windows as energy efficient as possible?
- Use Energy Star compact fluorescent light bulbs, and turn off the lights when you do not need them.
- Install low-flush toilets to save water.
- Use energy efficient shower heads and be sure your taps do not leak.
- Landscape your yard to take advantage of shade and protection offered by trees and shrubs. Consider using plants that do not require a lot of water.
- Buy Energy Star appliances and read the instructions for using them as efficiently as possible.
- Use a programmable thermostat to turn down the heat in your home when no one is home and at night.
- Using small appliances such as electric kettles, microwaves, toaster ovens, electric frying pans, and slow cookers is more energy efficient than using stove-top burners and full-sized ovens.
