The Cells of Plants

You will learn about how plants store and use energy to grow; but first, in this activity, you will learn what a plant is made of.

      



You know that all matter is made up of atoms and that atoms combine to make molecules. Living things (plants as well as animals) are made of cells. Cells are made of organelles, which are specific combinations of molecules that are able to carry out certain functions to help the cell live and grow. This is why cells are sometimes called the "building blocks of life."





Many types of cells exist, depending on the type of organism they are part of. However, they have some similar structures. The diagram below shows what a plant cell looks like. (Don't worry! You do not have to memorize all the parts!)
