You know that many things must be considered to ensure you are safe when driving. In Alberta, you must have a driver's licence to operate most motorized vehicles. In this activity, you will learn what kind of driver's licences can be obtained in Alberta.
The Government of Alberta will supply you with all the information you need on the various classes of licences available and how to obtain them in this province.
- A Class 1 licence allows you to drive any motor vehicle except a motorcycle. You must be at least 18 years old to get a Class 1 licence.
- A Class 2 licence allows you to drive various vehicles, including a taxi, ambulance, bus, recreational vehicle, moped, and passenger cars and trucks. You must be 18, you must pass a written test, a road test, an eye exam, and a medical exam, and you must have an air brake certificate to drive a vehicle with air brakes.
- A Class 3 licence allows you to drive passenger vehicles, recreational vehicles (including those vehicles towing a trailer), mopeds, and vehicles with three or more axles. You must be 18, have passed a written test, a road test, and an eye exam, and have an air brake certificate if you wish to drive a vehicle with air brakes. The road test must be taken using a vehicle with three or more axles.
- A Class 4 licence allows you to drive a taxi, ambulance, and bus seating up to 24 passengers, as well as mopeds, passenger vehicles, and recreational vehicles (including those vehicles towing a trailer). You must be 18 and pass a written test, a road test, an eye exam, and a medical exam.
- A Class 5 licence allows you to drive a two-axle single motor vehicle, a moped, a recreational vehicle, or a vehicle without air brakes towing a trailer. You must be 14 to begin learning to drive these vehicles, and you must be 16 before being licensed. You have to pass a road test.
- A Class 6 licence allows you to drive a motorcycle or moped. You must be at least 16 and must pass a written test, vision test, and a skill test or road test.
- A Class 7 licence allows you to drive a moped, any of the Class 5 vehicles as a learner, or a motorcycle as a learner (if at least 16). You have to be at least 14 for learning or licensing and must pass a written test and a vision test.
Ensuring you have the proper training for the vehicle you are operating is a very important part of road safety.
