Theme 3: Introduction

Theme 3: Immigration and Canadian Citizenship

In this next theme, you will learn about immigration and Canadian citizenship. It is important to ensure that Canada is able to maintain its current living standard and continue to provide the services to the population that are needed.

Population increases in two ways:

  • when natural births out number deaths
  • through immigration

As is the case in most of the wealthier nations, Canada has a low birthrate, so it must rely on immigration to maintain a healthy total population. Fortunately, Canada is an attractive country to immigrants, so it is able to put rules in place that govern the qualities considered to be important for these new citizens. As a humanitarian country, Canada also opens its doors to refugees who are fleeing their own countries for a variety of reasons.

Once a person is accepted into Canada as an immigrant, he or she may choose to follow the process necessary to become a Canadian citizen. You will learn all about Canadian immigration and the process of becoming a Canadian citizen in this theme. As well, you learn about the impact of immigration on different communities.
