Advertisements are around us all the time. Whether it's on a huge billboard as we are driving around town or a small label on the tag of our jeans, we are bombarded with advertisements. Whether we think so or not, advertising has a huge effect on us.

Think about this for a second: whenever you want to hear your favorite song, watch your favorite show, or see the latest current events, where do you go? You more than likely turn on your television, radio, or computer. These sources that the majority of the general public uses to get their news and information from are considered mass media. Let's take a look at the definition of mass media and advertising.

Advertising and the mass media work hand in hand to create a powerful and reliable demand for certain products.

Mass media advertising is advertising placed in mass media markets where it will reach large numbers of potential consumers. The mass media includes the Internet, television, radio, magazines, billboards, and other forms of mass communications. In all cases, a large proportion of the population has access to the communications provided by these media outlets, and advertising can have a profound impact on each.

Ever since mass media became mass media, companies have naturally used these means of communications to let a large number of people know about their products. There is nothing wrong with that, as it allows innovative ideas to be shared with others. However, as the years have progressed, advertising methods and techniques have advanced. These methods try to attract and entice consumers into thinking that luxuries, such as expensive brand-name clothing, are necessities.
