Social studies is the study of people in relation to each other and to their world. Throughout this course, you will develop the key values, attitudes, knowledge, understanding, skills, and processes necessary for you to become an active and responsible citizen. This will help to develop your ability to effect change in your community, society, and the world.

In this course, you will explore your personal identity and examine globalization, which is the process by which the world is becoming increasingly connected and interdependent. You will look at the history of globalization and the effects that globalization has on culture and identity, on the economy and the media, and on human rights and quality of life.

You will complete a variety of lessons based on six themes:

• There is no textbook required for the course, and you will work both online and with your teacher to complete the lessons and activities that are a part of each theme. There will also be opportunities for you to think about and show what you have learned.

• There is a pop-up dictionary you can use throughout the course. Double click on any word and you will be taken to the definition for it.

• There is also a glossary for this course. You will notice that important words have been highlighted in pink. When you put your cursor over one of these words and click on it, you will be able to read a definition for it.
