Children are given two or more names when they are born. A first name, like Josh or Sage, is also called a given name. Most people also have a middle name. Some people may have more than one middle name.
A last name is also called a surname. Many people have the same surname as their father. Some people have the same surname as their mother or a surname that includes both the mother's and father's last names.
Surnames usually come from one of four sources: the name of your father or mother, where you came from, your occupation, or a descriptive nickname for the person. When names were created, they answered one of the following questions:
-
Who is this person's father?
-
Where is this person from?
-
What does this person do for a living?
-
What is his or her most prominent feature?
