Lesson 1Activity 3: The Importance of Names

Warm Up

Did you know that the name Google started as a joke about the amount of information the search engine could search — the creators' mission for it to possess a googol of information? (A googol is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros.)

When founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin gave a presentation to an investor, they received a cheque made out to "Google." And the rest is history!

In this lesson, you will learn about the importance of names to companies, businesses, and groups of people.

Most businesses and organizations spend a lot of time thinking about the importance of a name. They must pick a name that is catchy and easy to remember. Actors and singers will sometimes change their name so that it is more appealing.

Katy Perry

Her real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson.
She changed to her mother's maiden name so she wouldn't be mistaken for the actress Kate Hudson.
Bruno Mars

His real name is Peter Gene Hernandez.
He changed his name so he wouldn't be stereotyped as a Latin singer.

Bands too often look for a name that is different and will help them stand out.

This is how the Canadian band Nickelback got its name. The bass player used to work at a Starbucks coffee shop. When giving change to customers he would often say, "Here's your nickel back." The phrase stuck with him, and the group decided to use it as the name for their band.
