Lesson 4 — Activity 2: Services in Communities
Warm Up
There are many people in communities trained to help in certain areas. These individuals provide certain services to the community and therefore carry certain titles. For example, a paramedic is a person trained to do medical work, especially emergency first aid. The more services a community has, the better able they are to deal with emergencies that occur. When we speak of essential services within a community, we are referring to services that the community would depend on for health and safety.

Sometimes, you may need to contact the groups in your community that help out in emergency situations. In order to get help, you need to know your exact location to give directions to the emergency response units. You should always be able to answer the questions listed below:
-
What is your street address or land location?
-
What does your home look like? (e.g. two-storey, brown with white trim, etc.)
It is also important to understand how to read maps so that you can get around your community.
