Theme 3: Introduction

The History of Globalization in Canada

Before you begin this theme, think about this:

Remember that globalization is the idea that the world is becoming one large, interconnected, interdependent community. This is happening because of advancements in communication, transportation, and information technologies. It can also happen when people of different cultures move to different countries or when large companies do business in many different countries around the world.

As you work through the lessons in this theme, you will learn about how globalization first came to Canada and see the effects of globalization on Canada and other areas of the world.

In this theme, you will first learn about the wants and needs of people and how needs are fulfilled. You will learn about the arrival to Canada of explorers, traders, and settlers and examine how the first inhabitants of Canada — Aboriginal peoples — lived both before and after European expansion. You will learn in detail about the challenges and changes that Aboriginal peoples have faced throughout the decades. Then you will learn about working conditions of the past and about regulations regarding working conditions today. To end this theme, you will learn about different kinds of taxes Canadians pay, what taxes are used for, and the services that taxes provide for us.
