In Alberta, there are many regulations to make sure that working conditions are fair.


In this activity, you will learn about some of these regulations.

The basic rules are listed below.

1. Minimum wage

Alberta's general minimum wage decreased on June 26, 2019 for people under the age of 18. The hourly minimum wage for people under the age of 18 is  is $13.00.   The minimum wage for employees over the age of 18 is $15.00 per hour.

2. Hours of Work

In Alberta some regulations apply to most employees about how much time they can spend working.

For some employees such as camp counsellors or police officers, the rules above don't apply.

3. Vacation Pay

Once an employee has worked at a job for a year, he or she is entitled to two weeks paid vacation. After working at the same job for five years, an employee is entitled to three weeks paid vacation.

 Vacation pay is the money an employer pays to an employee while he or she is on vacation. People who work for less than a year, such as summer students, still get vacation pay. It often is given as one cheque when they quit or finish their job. Vacation pay and vacation time ensure that an employee gets time off from his or her job each year.
