Warm Up
There are many different jobs in the world. It is interesting to see that all jobs can be classified into one of three groups.
In this activity, you will learn about the different job types.
Producing Goods
This means making things. These can be things to meet our needs or fulfill our wants.

A person who works in a sawmill turning logs into lumber is producing goods.
Providing Services
This means doing jobs for people. It includes things like teaching, waiting tables, and working in a store.

A person who works as a nurse in a hospital is providing a service.
Producing Goods and Providing Services
Some jobs involve both making things and helping people. If you sell art supplies in a store and also sell your paintings, then you are providing a service and producing goods.

A person who works in a flower store both making flower arrangements and serving customers is producing goods and providing a service.
In Activity 1, you looked at a family's economy. You saw that in the family economy, family members are connected. In the same way, jobs are connected to each other. The job you do is connected to other jobs. These connections are what form the systems we call economies. An example of how these connections work is shown below:
