Lesson 21 — Activity 1: What Is Rich?
Warm Up
What does it mean to be rich? Does the word "rich" equal "happy"? Is there a certain dividing line between "rich" and "poor"?
In this activity, you will learn more about what it means to be rich.

There are two major things that people consider when deciding if they are happy with their lives.
-
quality of life
- standard of living
You learned previously that quality of life refers to the level of enjoyment and fulfillment desired by humans from the life they live. Quality of life cannot be measured, because it depends on many things. Since people have different ideas, goals, and interests, the things that make one person happy may not make another person happy.
Joe's job is stressful and he has very little free time. He has been divorced twice and doesn't see his kids much. Sometimes he feels lonely.

Marissa loves her job. She also enjoys spending time with her husband and kids during holidays and days off.

Standard of living is a measure of material wealth, or how much money and how many things people have. We figure out the standard of living of a country by considering the amount of money that comes into a country as compared to the amount of people who live in the country.
Joe is a high level executive. Makes one million dollars a year. He has a very high standard of living.

Marissa works as a program analyst and makes sixty thousand a year. Her standard of living is not at high as Joe's.
