Lesson 22Activity 3: Local, National, or International News

Warm Up

Our newspapers, magazines, television, and radio carry different stories from different places whether within our city, province, or country or in different countries around the world.

In this activity, you will learn the difference between local, national, and international news stories.

In order to decide whether news is local, national, or international news , you must identify the location where the event took place. Local news occurs in our community, town, city, or province. National news would occur in our country (Canada), and international news occurs in other places in the world.

Try and recall some of the biggest local news events of the year. Can you do the same for national news? International news? Which stories affected you directly (teachers' strikes, park closings, etc.)? Which stories affected you indirectly (world hunger, natural disasters, rising oil prices, etc.)? Which stories did not affect you at all?
