Lesson 24Activity 3: Accessibility

Warm Up

Accessibility refers to how quickly and easily information can be gained. The more accessible an event is, the higher the credibility of the reports about it. Remember that one of the main reasons for globalization is accessibility of and advancements in communication technologies. These factors make it easier for people to share ideas and information.

Breaking News

In this activity, you will learn about accessibility.

Concern about the accessibility of events has led to the development of the "Eyewitness News" style of news coverage. When using this style, local stations work to enhance their credibility by having reporters on the scene, showing the audience everything from accidents to cats caught in trees. The term "seeing is believing" governs modern television, which means that the public will have a tendency to believe a news story if they can actually view it firsthand.

One way to access news is through the use of the Internet. The Internet is very accessible because it allows the viewers to witness news from across the globe first hand. In today's society, the push to have information at your fingertips is becoming stronger as technology becomes more user-friendly. Events that occur in another country can now be viewed by individuals as the situation is unfolding.

Tablet with news items

News items found in sources such as newspapers, radio, and television are more accessible than word-of-mouth news or individual letters because the news is presented in a way that is more accessible to the people it will impact. For example, information about new medical treatments published in newspapers is more accessible than if the same information was published in only one physician's newsletter or in a medical journal.
