Lesson 29 — Activity 2: Globalization, Democracy, and Human Rights
Warm Up
A democracy is a form of government in which people hold the power, either by voting for measures directly or by voting for representatives who then vote for them. Democracy promotes the principles of social equality and respect for the individual, while giving the majority of the people the power to make decisions.

In this activity, you will learn about the relationship between globalization, democracy, and human rights.
What Others Have Said ...
"My notion of democracy is that under it the weakest should have the same opportunity as the strongest. This can never happen expert through non-violence"
Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was a prominent Indian political leader who campaigned for Indian independence. He employed non-violent principles and peaceful disobedience.

What if you and your friends as a group had to decide on where to have dinner. You are told you can choose from among a number of restaurants, and you are provided a brief restaurant review for each. If — and only if — you and your friends agree on a single restaurant, the school principal will foot the bill for dinner. How will you go about reaching a settlement so everyone can be treated to a meal?
If everyone decided and all agreed that after reviewing the restaurants, you would hold a vote and the restaurant that received the most votes would be the one chosen, then this would be a democratic solution.
The values of freedom, respect for human rights, and the principle of holding elections where all citizens are allowed to vote are the essential elements of democracy. In turn, democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights.

Around the world, there is a push for democratization. This means changing governments who are not democracies to democratic models. Democratic countries, such as the United States and Britain, encourage other countries to change to democratic government. They do this by supporting local political or military movements or by using military force to remove dictators or unpopular leaders.
