Lesson 30Activity 2: Becoming an Active, Responsible Global Citizen

Warm Up

In the previous activity, you learned about an organization called Free The Children.

In this activity, you will learn more about this organization and design an action plan that shows the steps you can take to become a responsible, active citizen in a globalizing world.

Be the change you wish to see in the world
"Be the change you wish to see in the world " Mahatma Gandhi

Above is another quote from Mahatma Gandhi.

You may already know a lot about Free The Children and have heard about their work throughout the world. You may have heard of WE Day and participated in programs in your school or community. Click on the Play button to watch a video that shows an overview of the programs and endeavours that Free The Children is involved in.

Free The Children is an international charity and educational partner. The organization is unique among Canadian charities in that it operates programs both in Canada and around the world. As you saw in the video, Free The Children works to ensure that all children have access to education and do not have to work to ensure their family’s survival.

The organization has created an international development model that addresses the five primary causes of poverty with holistic and sustainable solutions that work to change communities.

This program is called Adopt a Village.

Adopt a Village’s five pillars are:

•education

•clean water and sanitation

•health

•agriculture and food security

•alternative income and livelihood

How can an individual person respond to the opportunities and
challenges of globalization?

1. The first step is to explore issues and choose one of interest to you.

2. The next step is to brainstorm different actions you could take to
influence that issue.

3. The third step is to write an action plan using a step-by-step action plan tool.

4. With help from your teacher, follow your action plan.

You will have an opportunity to develop an action plan in the next assignment.
