Lesson 19 — Activity 1: Adding Time

Getting Ready

Often you have a lot to do in a certain amount of time.

Sometimes you have more than one thing to do in a certain period of time. Each job takes a specific amount of time, and you need to know how many of the jobs you can do in a fixed amount of time.

Think about This:

Think of an activity that you are interested in where time is a factor. This could be a sporting activity, getting to a vacation spot, your morning routine to get to school, or some other activity. You will use this activity in an upcoming assignment.

In this activity, you will learn how to add times together. This will allow you to know whether or not you can finish all of your work in the time you have been given.

For example, let's say you have two jobs to do.

The first one takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete.

The second one takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete.

You have been given 5 hours to complete both jobs. Can you do it?

To solve this question, follow these steps:

Step 1: Add the minutes up first.

45 + 20 = 65

Step 2: You know there are 60 minutes in an hour. If your total from step 1 is higher than 60, subtract 60 from the total minutes to find out how many hours and minutes you have. If you still have a number higher than 60 after you subtract the first time, keep subtracting until your answer is less than 60.

65  – 60 = 5
This means you have 1 hour and 5 minutes.

Step 3: Add up the hours from the question.

3 + 1 = 4 hours

Step 4: Add any hours and minutes you found in Step 2 to your answer from Step 3.

4 hours + 1 hour and 5 minutes = 5 hours and 5 minutes

You cannot complete both jobs in 5 hours!

These steps will help you figure out how much time jobs will take you.

The steps above will allow you to figure out any time.

Here's another example:

You have three jobs to do: job one takes 17 minutes, job two takes 2 hours and 4 minutes, and job three takes 6 hours and 19 minutes.
Follow the steps above:

Step 1: Add the minutes up first.

17 + 4 + 19 = 40 minutes

Step 2: You know there are 60 minutes in an hour. If your total from step 1 is higher than 60, subtract 60 from the total minutes to find out how many hours and minutes you have. If you still have a number higher than 60 after you subtract the first time, keep subtracting until your answer is less than 60.

40 is less than 60, so we don't have to do this step.
Step 3. Add up the hours from the question.

2 + 6 = 8 hours

Step 4: Add any hours and minutes you found in step 2 to your answer from step 3.

8 hours + 40 minutes = 8 hours and 40 minutes

Now you know how to calculate how long jobs will take to complete.

It will take you 8 hours and 40 minutes to complete all three jobs.

Try this:

Add the following times together for the jobs that Theo and Jon had to complete. Follow the steps outlined above.

1. Theo had two jobs to complete. Job one takes 4 hours and 16 minutes, and job two takes 3 hours and 27 minutes. How many hours will it take Theo to complete both jobs?

2. Jon also had two jobs to complete. The first one takes 5 hours and 5 minutes, and the second one takes 6 hours and 59 minutes. How many hours will it take Jon to complete his two jobs?

For Theo:
Step 1: 16 + 27 = 43
Step 2: 43 is less than 60, so go on to Step 3.
Step 3: 4 + 3 = 7 hours
Step 4: 7 hours + 43 minutes = 7 hours and 43 minutes

For Jon:
Step 1: 5 + 59 = 64
Step 2: 64 – 60 = 4. This means you have 1 hour and 4 minutes.
Step 3: 5 + 6 = 11 hours
Step 4: 11 + 1 hour + 4 minutes = 12 hours and 4 minutes
