Lesson 27 — Activity 2: Using a Bar Graph to Display Information

Getting Ready

You will recall that in the L26 — A1 Assignment you created a bar graph.

In this activity, you will look at frequency distribution tables and  create bar graphs from these.

Once again, you can see what a bar graph looks like.

Let's say that you have gathered information from your classmates on their favourite school subject. You may have made a frequency table from that information that looks like this:

Favourite Subjects of Room 5 Students

Favourite Subject
Tally
Frequency
Computers
IIII
4
Science
II
2
Social Studies
IIIII III
8
Phys. Ed.
IIIII IIIII II
12
English
IIIII I
6
Math
IIIII IIIII III
13

From the information in the frequency table, you can build a bar graph. A bar graph from the above information could look like this:

Very quickly you can see from reading the bar graph that Math and Phys. Ed. are the favourite subjects of this group of students.
