Lesson 1 — Activity 3: Your Language Arts Experiences

You have had some time to share a bit about yourself and think about connecting to others.

Now you will think about the skills you are acquiring in Language Arts that allow you to communicate well.

The skills of Language Arts are: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, Viewing, and Representing.

Language Arts skills

You use these skills all of the time, even though you might not realize it. Right now you are reading and perhaps listening as you work on the course.
You will also be doing some writing when you complete assignments for an activity. You might do some speaking as you work with your teacher and others on the questions.
Outside of school, you will also be using these skills constantly, whether at home, with friends, or at work. Wherever you are, you will be using one or more of these skills because communication is something we do every day, always.

Take a moment to reflect on the amount of communication that has filled your day so far:

  • Did you listen to music to wake up?
  • Did you talk to your family while you were getting ready for school?
  • Did you watch a bit of TV or go online before you went to school?
  • Did you look at posters, billboards, graffiti, or signs on your way to school?
  • Did you read notices or signs as you made your way to school or work?
  • Did you talk to friends?
  • Did you ask or answer questions in class or at work?
  • Did you write a note or text someone?
  • Did you draw, paint, sculpt, or doodle to represent an idea?

As you can see, you are constantly putting your communication skills to work, so the more you develop them, the more effective you will be at school, at home, at work, with friends ... everywhere!
