Lesson 27 β€” Activity 1: Chapters 8 and 9

Read Chapters 8 and 9 of the novel. Remember to continue to add to your vocabulary log.

This is a good example of a Hero's Journey story.
Freak tells Max that a quest is an adventure where you have to use your imagination. Freak the Mighty could be called a Hero’s Journey or Hero's Quest story.

The Hero’s Journey is a story pattern that can be found in stories written thousands of years ago and is still being used today. The quest, in the form of a journey, usually happens this way: the hero sets forth from the world of common day into a land of adventures, tests, and magical rewards. Sometimes in a quest, a knight in shining armour wins the heart of a beautiful maiden or princess.

You may have read many stories or have seen many movies where this happens. The movie you watched in the L25 β€” A3 assignment was an example of a quest.

One well known Hero’s Journey movie is Star Wars, where the viewer watches Luke Skywalker as he meets each stage in his journey. Other examples of this type of movie are: The Wizard of Oz,The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and the Harry Potter movies.

There are stages to the Hero's Journey. They are:

1.The Ordinary World
2. Call to Adventure
3. Crossing the Threshold
4. The Path of Trials
5. The Master of Two Worlds
This might happen in The Path of Trials.

Watch the video, "The Hero's Journey", that uses the movies Star Wars, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and the Wizard of Oz to show these stages.

Now let's look at the stages of the Hero’s Journey or quest in Freak the Mighty, up to the end of Chapter 9.

1. The Ordinary World: The hero is shown in the world he has been living in so far. This is where the journey begins. We meet Max and see how he lives before he becomes friends with Freak.
2. The Call to  Adventure: The hero faces a problem or challenge. Max and Freak take on the bullies, become friends, and call themselves Freak the Mighty.
3. Crossing the Threshold: The hero decides to accept the call to adventure. Max begins to enjoy hanging out with Freak.
4. The Path of Trials: The hero goes on an adventure meeting new friends, mentors, and enemies. The hero learns new skills, and overcomes challenges.
Kevin becomes Max's mentor, teaching him about quests and knights. The boys begin to go on quests. The first quest involves pretending their neighbourhood is a secret kingdom and visiting the hospital.

As the story continues, you will see more of The Path of Trials and as the story concludes, you will see the Master of Two Worlds stage.

The boys are embarking on a quest.
