Lesson 29 โ€” Activity 1: Chapters 20 and 21


Read Chapters 20 and 21.


You have now read to the end of Chapter 21 and have almost completed the story. Letโ€™s return to the Heroโ€™s Journey that you learned about in Lesson 27 โ€” Activity 1, when you had read to the end of Chapter 9.

Hereโ€™s the table from that lesson:

1. The Ordinary World: The hero is shown in the world he has been living in so far.This is where the journey begins. We meet Max and see how he lives before he becomes friends with Freak.
2. The Call to  Adventure: The hero faces a problem or challenge.Max and Freak take on the bullies, become friends, and call themselves Freak the Mighty.
3. Crossing the Threshold: The hero decides to accept the call to adventure.Max begins to enjoy hanging out with Freak.
4. The Path of Trials: The hero goes on an adventure meeting new friends, mentors, and enemies. The hero learns new skills and overcomes challenges.


Up to the end of Chapter 9:
Kevin becomes Max's mentor, teaching him about quests, and knights. The boys begin to go on quests. The first quest involves pretending their neighbourhood is a secret kingdom and visiting the hospital.






The hero is embarking on a quest.

     
Quests continue throughout the novel.




           The hero faces many challenges during The Path of Trials.


        
Since Chapter 9, the journey or quest has continued and a lot has happened in the story. We can now add this information to The Path of Trials:

4. The Path of Trials

The hero goes on an adventure meeting new friends, mentors, and enemies. The hero learns new skills and overcomes challenges.

















From the end of Chapter 9:

Allies: Gwen, Loretta, Iggy, Gram, Grim, Mrs. Donelli

Enemies: Maxโ€™s Dad

Mentor: Kevin

Skills: Max begins to do well in school. Improves reading and writing skills.

Challenges:
  • Max and Freak find Lorettaโ€™s purse and return it to her.
  • Freak chokes on chop suey in the school cafeteria.
  • Max is kidnapped by his father and his allies and mentor come to his aid.
