Dance has various levels of participation.  Dance is a universal language that has many forms across many cultures.  In North American culture, and many cultures, dance is used in social settings like weddings as a form of celebration.

In this project, you will be required to submit videos of 2 social dances.  One dance will need to be a line dance and the second video will need to be a ball room dance.

Examples of Ballroom Dances:
  • salsa
  • waltz
  • 2-Step
  • Cha Cha

 Note: If you are finding it difficult to find/learn a dance, there are hundreds if not thousands of videos on YouTube. Search specifically for the style you would like to do whether it be the two step, bollywood, salsa, or the line dance!

The time you spend practising, and performing the dance can be used towards the minimum five hours your required for the dance component of your PE 30 program if you are choosing to complete the dance dimension.

Criteria for Dance videos

  • Must be 30-60 seconds in length.
  • Music must be able to be heard.
  • You must have a partner for the ballroom dance.
  • Your feet must be able to seen for the majority of the video.

Tips for Dance Videos

  • Relax and have fun: more marks are given for effort and you showing that you have a good attitude than for technical skill.
  • Be sure that your entire body is in the video frame... don't cut out your feet or head
  • Find dances that you have an interest in learning (for example, at the Calgary Stampede many people 2 Step to country music)
  • If you have friends that are dancers, ask them if they will help you if you are not a 'dancer'.  Parents or other family members may be able to help out as well.
  • You can submit a group video of a line dance if you have others who would like to join you in your video

Please upload your video to YouTube and submit the link to your lead teacher, along with a completed self-assessment for each dance. Remember when uploading videos to YouTube, you can adjust the privacy settings so that only those with the link can view it. Alternatively, you can submit the video by post, using a USB drive or DVD. If you have difficulty submitting the assignment, contact your teacher to arrange another method of submission.

 Assessment

Students will use the rubric to complete a self-assessment that is worth 25% of the mark. Your teacher's assessment of the dance will make up the remaining 75% of your mark.  You will need to submit 2 total rubrics, one for each dance.

When you complete the rubric, submit by navigating to the online submissions section of the course and uploading your file on the submission tool page titled 'Social Dance'. Be sure to either include the link to where your video file located or your video file with each rubric.
