Lesson 5: Heat and Temperature

Don't you hate it that just when you have made a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, someone comes to the door, and by the time you get back, your coffee or hot chocolate is cold? What happened to the heat? Why did the temperature drop?

Did you know that car radiators are used to transfer the heat of the engine away from the engine? And an elephant's ears do the same thing! The ears transfer the heat of the elephant's body into its surrounding environment!

In this lesson, you will explore what heat and temperature is and how heat is transferred between objects.

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • where heat comes from
  • how temperature and heat are different
  • how heat transfers from one object to another

Key terms for this lesson:

  • heat
  • temperature
  • thermal energy
  • friction
  • kinetic energy
  • conduction
  • convection
  • radiation
