Lesson 9: Structure and Function of Plant and Animal Cells

Factories have exterior walls that surround them and interior walls to create work areas. They usually have some kind of a production line where a product is assembled and a management department that decides what product is made. There are many other departments as well. A factory will have a power plant that provides the energy it needs to run. Finally, people will be employed to keep everything clean and in good working order.

Cells are very similar to factories. To stay alive and function properly, cells have a division of labour similar to that found in factories. You will learn about this division of labour in this lesson.

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • what cells are
  • the parts of plant and animal cells
  • the differences between plant and animal cells

Key terms for this lesson:

  • cells
  • organelles
  • cell membrane
  • cytoplasm
  • nucleus
  • mitochondrion
  • vacuole
  • cell wall
  • chloroplasts
