Closures

All close-fitting garments require closures. Closures include simple plackets, buttons, buttonholes, snaps, Velcro, zippers, and hooks and eyes.

Plackets

Plackets can be placed in garment sections that have no seam line. The placket treatment might be faced using a strip of fabric.

  • A faced placket requires a facing which is stitched in a V-line resembling a dart. A slit is made down the middle of the V, then the placket is turned. The opening looks like a V. Failing to clip close to the V end results in puckers and wrinkles.
  • If the placket is on a seam, the seam allowance can be turned under twice, pressed and edge-stitched.
  • A continuous placket involves sewing a strip of fabric to the cut opening. The strip is then folded twice, pressed evenly, and top-stitched.

Standards for Evaluating Plackets

  1. The placket closure coordinates with the rest of the garment.
  2. The closure includes closure mechanisms such as buttons and buttonholes or snaps.
  3. The placket allows the garment to be put on easily with no pulling.
  4. The placket ends smoothly with no wrinkles.
