Lesson 1Activity 2: Place Value

Place value is important when dealing with any numbers. So, what is place value?

Place value is the value of a number based on the position in that number.

For example, the $100 bill contains place values. The "1" in "100" is in the hundreds place, the first "0" is in the tens place, and the last "0" is in the ones place.

Think about it!

The numbers below represent money, and you have to make a choice. Which of these would you choose if you were going on a shopping spree?

$4     $400     $40,000     $ 4,000,000

A quick look at the amounts of money in the box above shows the flexibility of our number system. Putting the same number (4) in another column changes the amount of money from four dollars ($4) to four million dollars ($4,000,000). If you were going on a shopping spree, you would probably want $4,000,000 to spend rather than $4!

Here is an example of the different place values:

Remember!

The table below shows how the value of a number changes based on the place value of the column in which it is placed. Note the names at the top of the columns.

Amount
  Thousands   Hundreds   Tens   Ones
$4,526  4  5  2  6
$3,024  3  0  2  4
$7,800  7  8  0  0

The table below shows another way to show the real value of each number based on the column it is in.

Amount
Thousands
  Hundreds Tens
  Ones
 $4,526  4000  500  20  6
 $3,024  3000  0  20  4
 $7,800  7000  800  0  0

Self-check!

Try this!

Identify the place value of the digit 4 in each of the following values:

$342
$ 4,765
$12,89 4

After you have determined the place values, how would you write the entire number (such as $342) as money?
