Lesson 2Activity 2: Workplace Subtraction

Suppose you are a guitar salesman. A customer has just purchased a guitar for $2,128 (before taxes). The customer gives you a store coupon for $65 and wants to know what the new cost would be.

To find the new cost of the guitar, you must use your good math skills or you may not get a sale!

Follow these basic rules to complete subtraction successfully for larger numbers.

  1. Always line the numbers up one under the other, beginning with the right-hand column.
  2. The number 0 is important. Be sure to include it.
  3. Only numbers from 0 to 9 can fill a place in the answer.
  4. If the number to subtract is larger than the number from which you are subtracting, borrow from the column to the left and regroup.

When you have mastered the processes of addition and subtraction, all numbers, regardless of their size, can be added and subtracted.
