Fractions are parts of a whole. If Jason buys 2 pieces of a 4-slice pizza, then he has bought a part of a whole pizza. He has bought 2 out of 4 pieces. This can be written as a fraction in two ways as follows:

2/4 =   2   =    numerator   
             4       denominator
