Mixed numbers can also be subtracted. This process involves subtracting the whole numbers and then the fractions. Study the example below to see how to subtract mixed numbers.

Follow these steps to add or subtract mixed numbers:
Step 1: Check to see that all fractions have a
common denominator.
Step 2: If not, multiply the numerators and denominators to find the
equivalent fractions.
Step 3: Add (or subtract) the
whole numbers.
Step 4: Add (or subtract) the numerators of the new
equivalent fractions. The denominator stays the same.
Step 5: If the result is an
improper fraction, regroup it into a
whole number
and a
proper fraction.
Step 6: Be sure that the
fraction
part is in its
lowest terms.
