Lesson 15 Activity 3:

Using Online Conversion Tools

Now that you are a pro at converting metric to imperial and imperial to metric, let's take a look at some online conversion tools that will help you when you need to convert units, either in your home or at your job.

You've probably already come across the problem of converting units in your daily life. Whether it's with cooking recipes, looking at the speedometer in your car, or needing to know how long something is. As you know, having to convert units from metric to imperial or imperial to metric can be tricky, however, there are online unit conversion tools that will make your life much simpler!

There are many websites that you can go to that have online unit conversions. For this lesson, we will use one particular site that has many different options for you to choose from!

Whether you need to convert units at home when using a recipe, or you need to convert from kilometres to miles because you are going on a trip, or you need to convert units in your job as a carpenter, hairstylist, or baker, these online conversion sites can be a very helpful tool to use!

Click on the link to go to the onlineconversion.com website. You will see that the site will do conversions for you in many different areas, including clothing, cooking, temperature as well as the areas you learned throughout this theme (length, mass/weight, capacity/volume).

Let's practise using the site together.

  1. Click here to go to the OnlineConversion website.
  2. Click on the Weight/Mass link and then the Common Weight and Mass Conversions link.
  3. Enter the quantity (amount) that you want to convert. For this example, let's try 50.
  4. Let's convert FROM kilograms (scroll down until you find kilogram) TO lbs (pounds) (scroll down until you find lb.)
  5. Click on the "Convert" button.
  6. What did you get?

Did you get 50 kilograms = 110.231 131 09 pounds? If so, you did it correctly! As you may have noticed, the number after the decimal is very long. You probably won't need to be that exact, so you can round the number to the nearest ones place, which in this case would be 110 pounds!

  Self-check!

Try This!
