Supplements

The use of dietary supplements is widespread in sports.
Athletes should recognize that they cannot expect benefits from all supplements. Many products are not supported by enough research and some may even be harmful. All athletes should look carefully at the rewards and risks of individual supplements before trying them.
Athletes look to nutritional supplements for benefits such as these:
- Increased energy supply
- More intensive training by promotion of recovery between training sessions
- Good health and reduced sickness, illness, or injury
- Enhanced competitive performance

Media advertisements for supplements are prevalent in athletic settings. From protein powders and energy drinks to compounds with
names we can hardly pronounce, many of the ads
make claims of improving performance by taking a supplement. Just because a teammate or peer takes a supplement does not mean
it is right for you.
Always speak to a medical professional or certified nutritionist before taking any supplement.
