Nutritional Objectives for Competition

Athletes should consider what to eat and drink before, during, and after competitions.

Four goals for athletes' nutrition during competition are the following:

  1. Hydration: Athletes must stay hydrated for optimum performance.
  2. Increased Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are necessary for activities that are high intensity and short duration.
  3. Fat: Fat is useful for activities of moderate intensity and long duration, but fat is inadequate for high energy output.
  4. Protein: Protein helps to maintain and repair muscle.
