Types of Assessment

The lessons and activities in this course are designed to help you achieve the learning outcomes of this course and to succeed in completing the Social Studies 10-1 course.

Each unit requires that you do all the reading, discussions and assignments in order before you can open the next assignment and unit.

Assignments are provided in each unit. Use the link provided in the assignment prompt box to download and save the document to your computer. * Please note, you must download the assignment document from the link provided. The complete assignment instructions are included in this document. You will be expected to submit all of the downloaded pages with the assignment.  When you have competed the assignment and saved it to your computer, you should submit it on the assignment submission page. These assignments include writing assignments and creative assignments, such as visual presentations, collages, or illustrated documents. In addition, some assignments give you the option to create and present using a video format like YouTube or Power Point.

Self-check assessments are short quizzes that help you assess your own understanding of unit content. These self-assessment quizzes are not for marks.

Discussions are forums to provide sharing of ideas about current affairs and how they are impacted by concepts studied in the course. You should ensure that you have read the course material before attempting the relevant discussion posting and then post your discussion using social studies knowledge to address your perspective about the issue. Your teacher will assess your posting using the discussion rubric as well as provide feedback in a return post. You may also respond to other student postings. All discussions are monitored to ensure that proper discussion protocols are observed. Any improper discussion postings will be removed immediately and notification will be sent to the student as well as their supervisor.

Unit reviews appear at the end of each unit. They must be completed before moving onto the next unit. These reviews help you assess your own understanding of unit content and prepare you for your mid-term and final exam. You are allowed two attempts at the quiz. The second attempt will reset after 30 minutes. Check your feedback for the previous quiz before making your second attempt. We will use the higher of the two grades to determine your mark.

Exams are supervised and must be written under the supervision of an approved exam supervisor, usually a teacher at your local school. These exams mirror the format of the provincial diploma exams.  You must achieve 40% or better on your final exam in order to get credit for Social 10-1. Appeal exams are available.

Marking Criteria

Each assignment is evaluated according to an established rubric or guideline for marking. If you have any questions about the expectations of the assignment, please discuss it with your teacher. You will be provided feedback about your assignment to help you improve your work.
