Welcome to Workplace Safety Practices (HCS 3010)!

Course Description:

In this course you will gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes pertaining to workplace health and safety, thereby preparing you for:


  • workplace orientation to off-campus education learning experiences (such as Work Experience)

  • your future transition to the actual world of work

  • working safely within a particular work site.

You will:

  1. Become familiar with workplace health and safety to prepare you to function responsibly within your chosen career.
  2. Learn to identify various types of hazards, and to assess these hazards for purposes of helping to control them.
  3. Become familiar with fire, ladder and electricity safety as it applies to various work sites.
  4. Learn the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  5. Create a transitional strategy to accommodate personal changes and build personal values. You will identify short-term and long-term goals relating to your future work life, and you will identify steps to achieve these goals.


*In addition to earning one credit, in HCS 3010,  toward your high school diploma, this course is recommended for the Registered Apprenticeship Program.

The pre-requisite for this course is HCS 3000: Workplace Safety Systems.

  • Students gain the attitudes, knowledge and skills related to workplace safety practices

  • This course has six units that should be completed in sequence.
  • Each unit contains the following:
    • introduction
    • glossary
    • lessons
    • concept self-checks
    • glossary self-checks
    • auto-graded quizzes
  • Access the glossary on any lesson by clicking the "Glossary" button located in the top right-hand corner of every lesson. The glossary will open in a separate window; after reviewing the glossary, you can close the window and return to your course page.
  • There are three quizzes which are based on one or more units of study; quizzes are based on concept self-checks and glossary self-checks. Students have two attempts to achieve 50% or higher on all quizzes in order to pass the course and move forward.
  • In addition, there is one practice quiz and a final quiz, which covers material from the whole course.

How You Will Be Assessed


  • This course has 3 Unit Quizzes, a practice Quiz and a Final Quiz.
  • The unit quizzes will be weighted 75% toward your final course mark (25% for each quiz).
  • Each quiz must be completed successfully with a minimum of 50%, and any incomplete or non-submitted quizzes will result in a failing grade with no credit being awarded.
  • You have 2 attempts to achieve 50% or greater; if you do not achieve 50% or greater in 2 attempts you must contact your lead teacher.
  • If you do not achieve 50% or greater, on any of the quizzes, the next quiz will not appear.
  • Your quiz will be automatically graded, indicating your grade, and showing correct answers for all questions. The questions for each attempt are randomized, making each quiz unique.
  • The final quiz will be weighted 25% toward your final course mark; you must achieve at least 50% on it to successfully complete the course.

  • Each unit begins with guiding questions and a summary of the lesson content.
    Some headings are drop-downs; you must click the drop-down to reveal more content.
    After you read the lesson content, the "Think About It" section engages you to make personal application with the lesson content.
    The "Digging Deeper" section is designed to encourage you to continue to build your knowledge of the lesson content.
    Content in the "Digging Deeper" section does not appear on auto-graded quizzes.
