  3. Understand hazards in the workplace.

  6. Complete a quiz based on glossary terms and key concepts from Unit 1.


 The Big Ideas - Learning Outcomes 

  1. Understand the definitions of "accident", "incident" and "causation".
  2. Understand and learn about hazards in the workplace.

  3. Define and explain "causation". 
  4. Understand Hazard Identification for physical, chemical, biological, psychosocial and ergonomic factors. 
  5. Understand Hazard Assessment, including job-hazard analysis and/or process analysis                  
  6. Understand Hazard Controls, including elimination, engineering, administrative, personal protective equipment or a combination of more than one control.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of legislation associated with workplace safety.

Key Concepts 

  • An accident is an incident that has caused one or more of: injury, property damage, environmental damage, loss of productivity, loss of profits.
  • An incident is an event that could have, but did not, cause an injury.
  • Loss causation models guide companies in preventing accidental loss.
  • A hazard is anything that can cause injury or loss.
  • Hazard Identification, assessment and control can help prevent injuries.
  • Identification is seeing a hazard and knowing which of the 5 types of hazard it is.
  • Assessment is knowing the risk of each hazard; whether it is a high, medium or low risk.
  • Control is what may be done to limit the hazard from causing harm or loss; there are 3 methods of control.
