Lockout/Tagout Procedures

Many people are hurt or killed every year by using damaged electrical equipment or by fixing equipment still connected to electricity.

Lockout procedures are used in many industries to prevent these types of accidents.

Locking-out means disconnecting the equipment from the power source -- first, by turning off the switch, and then by turning off the circuit at the circuit breaker.

A tag or lock is put on the switch and/or the circuit breaker to make sure that no one will turn on the equipment by mistake. When the equipment is repaired, the locks are removed and the circuit is turned back on. If a circuit breaker trips repeatedly, do not try to turn it on again. Call an electrician and have the circuit repaired.
